The 4870 at full blast is reported in the low 50's dB depending on the card. This fan BY ITSELF is 66.5dB. If you're skittish about using them, you can use these, they're what I use on my 480 rad. Not nearly as loud as the Delta, moves enough air to make a substantial breeze. You can also pick the tail, which is a really nice plus.

So hsf combo total cost $101.79.

Not too shabby.

Sounds good--you got the mounting kit for it, too? Most high-end coolers will ONLY give you the sink, you have to look around for a backplate, etc. Have fun with the setup, and report temps and OC'ing results!

Yeah the setup i bought comes with a LGA775, 1156, and 1366 brackets, i'll be able to use this for a while. I'm going to install it on my current E6420 (stock 2.1ghz oc @2.8ghz with an Arctic Cooler 7 installed 28C idle 49C load 24/7) and test it out before i put it on the i7 im going to buy

That's a pussy OC...I pushed my E6400 to 3.4GHz with nothing more than a Zalman 9700, and it's stock at 2.13... :P

Well, that's the 24/7 spec so i wanted to make sure it stays cold :) I got 3.4 as well, but it was running real hot, about 60C+ load.

However with the hsf combo decided upon, it'll be awesome to see what i can reasonably push this too. Of course my 24/7 oc will stay under 50C load.

You realize that chips can take way more heat than that, right? They don't go south until you hit 70C, and then it still needs to be consistent.

Well yeah I realize that a chip can take 70C, but I was under the impression that anything after 50C continuously would cause it to slowly die.

Not at all. A chip doesn't degrade in the slightest until 71C depending on its batch. You won't kill it outright till you get to about 95C.

Unfortunately, my E6420 won't clock higher than 2.8 and be stable. I had the voltage cranked up quite a bit, about 1.7v or so, and it STILL wouldn't stabilize! I have no idea why, as i've got 3.4 before. Maybe I killed it a little when i had it to 3.4 last time?

...You put 1.7V into a 65nm Intel CPU? >_< They are only built to take 1.5 max. I hope you only did it for a suicide run. You need to also mess with your NB (MCH) and FSB voltage (VTT). Make them each 1.32V and see what happens. Also, what speed is your RAM trying to run at with the FSB for your OC? You might need to put it into 1:1 if it's more than 50MHz or so above stock speed.

Yeah it was a suicide run, i was just trying to see what voltage i needed to make it stable, and even that wasn't enough. I did have both of those at that voltage (even a little higher at one point) and still no dice. Ram is OCZ reaper DDR2-1066 at 5,5,5,12. Voltage is a little crazy for the ram, as the packaging states it needs 2.1v to run stable.

my motherboard doesn't have as many options for OC as it does for my CPU.

My only options are 200mhz, 300mhz, 333mhz, and 400mhz. then there are a few different multipliers as well. But i can't just type in what clock i want, unlike the cpu settings.

currently I've got my ram setup 3.33 and 400mhz. giving me 1322,(5-5-5-12) which surprisingly my ram handles fine, but i still cant set my cpu higher than 363mhz, and at an x8 gives me only 2.9ghz. I'm going to keep looking and see if i can figure it out.

EDIT: I got 2.95 out of it, but only one core was stable, the other failed my prime95 test immediately. Maybee it has something to do with the dual-channel part of my ram screwing up?
