downloaded it from www.openwall.com, there's a 3 john.exe in the folder, 1 is in the run folder, second one is in the john-k6 folder and the last one is in the john-mmx folder. i don't know which one i'm going to run, but i've tried all of them, the john.exe i've opened first was in the run folder, the other two gave me the message "can't found cygwin1.dll". but it has cygwin1.dll in the run folder...don't know what to do from here...need help

I wouldn't download any tools from anything other than a friend or an FTP a friend has set up.

You may have infected yourself, then again, maybe not.

I ran out of witty signatures so I used this one as a space-filler.

This should all be in the readme, unless by chance the one you downloaded didn't have all the info. john-k6 is designed to run faster on AMD chips, john-mmx faster on intel basicly. Just ignore them. The other two can't see cygwin1.dll cause their not in the same folder, so they'll never run.

But the biggest problem I think, john the ripper is a COMMAND LINE program. You're just double clicking it to run them, and a windows pops up and goes away, right? You'll have to open a command line first, then run them.

he means just open your command prompt, change to the directory that the folder is located in, and run it using the command prompt. You cant open it by double clicking on it.

Hey, Im having the same problem with John the Ripper, ot similar. Ive downloaded three different .ZIP files with it on and everyone i use in WINZIP then try to use it just says "Unable to load main program" Ive tried all three and none of them work, ive tried doing the command prompt but tht doesnt work either (running "C:\My Documents\Adams Stuff\Other\john.exe") but that doesnt work. Anyone no how to fix it so I can work J.T.R?

Apologies, I now have the program running, well I can get it open I just dont know what to do now, I went on Google to find a tutorial of some kind to see how to use it but none that were at such a low interlectual level for me to understand.

Basically all I want to do is find some peoples hotmail account passwords, I dont know how to go about doing that because I have opened the JOHN.COM file which doesnt let me type anything into it. I read about having to create a new .txt document and writing the user name in or something like that then pasting it over the JOHN.COM file.

For example if I wanted to get hold of "random_email@hotmail.com" password how would I go about doing that?

I sense that you will get flamed by someone...but all I will do now is give an excerpt from "How to Become a Hacker"
quote:
The basic difference is this: hackers build things, crackers break them.

If you want to be a hacker, keep reading. If you want to be a cracker, go read the alt.2600 newsgroup and get ready to do five to ten in the slammer after finding out you aren't as smart as you think you are. And that's all I'm going to say about crackers.

--Eric Steven Raymond

Basically, my point is that it's not this forum's job to answer those kinds of questions...
