Hi this is my first post the problem i have is that I want to copy the SAM file on a friends computer but the problem is the primary boot device is the Hard drive and the BIOS is password Protected so i can't change the boot sequence.

I know there is a way to change the boot sequence to the cd drive without going into the BIOS.

I though it was one of the function keys but i have tried them

some computers can boot from other devices without entering the bios, but it's rare. Most that can do that just have boot from network as an option. Try booting from a floppy, it normaly overrides the hdd in boot orders.

this entirely depends on the make of the laptop, some laptops prompt you for a preboot menu, like, hit f12 for boot menu...

some do not.

Like the above post, you may be able to boot to a floppy first, other than that, google the pc maker and look for a bios boot function like f12...

"Password protection: If this is enabled, the BIOS will ask for a password before booting up. Be very careful with this one: If you forget the password, you'll have to reset a motherboard jumper or disconnect your CMOS battery, which will cause you to lose all your settings, or you may even have to buy a new motherboard."

YOu can search for the specific motherboard pic that will tell you exactly where the reset switch is...

What is the OS? if its xp and its just a friends average pc then hit f8 when windows boots to get into another boot screen, boot into safe mode, select administrator, and it will log you in as admin ... thats only if he hasnt set and admin pass ... in most cases that will work .. I beleive there is a backup of the sam file you can grab if your admin while windows it running actualy, also once your logged in there is a debug command you can exec through command prompt that will reset his bios.

on xp home the only way to set the admin password is with a net user command, and most people don't know you can do that. So it's almost always a blank password.

Also note: on xp and 2k3, a user account with no password has a lot less rights then a normal user with a password, they can not run remote tasks, set up schedualed tasks, or many other simple things. Why the blank administrator password isn't a big security risk. That account can't even access c$ shares.

Ozzy - I didn't know that about admin not accessing C$ shares. But I think it's a huge security risk in that you can change or create acccounts that can; then login normally as one of those and run amok.

all default drive shares, c$, d$, ect, are admin level access only. Normal users shouldn't have access. Since admins can share any drive anyways, there's no security risk in there, it just feels that way.

When a user has no password on xp\2k3, they can not remotely access a share, that's why they can't do c$.

Well that do you mean by back door? I was talking about some thing a program puts into his coding so if needed he can override any thing. I think your talking about some thing like a trojan that opens specific ports or allows you to remotley control some ones pc?, and I am almost dead positive VB scripts have to be compiled.

As much as I like to make fun of VB, even I have more respect for it then this. ;) Unless you mean writing VB *SCRIPT* in notepad, then no. VB is a compiled language, and much more complex when I would want to put into notepad anyways.

i'd pop out the battery on the mobo, wait 2 minutes, then put it back in. then the BIOS's settings are reset (to stock)

raniken: a few (not many) use flash for the bios settings. I think dells do this on laptops for theft protection.
